The issue is whether, at the big Bang, and the gradual evolution of material life that followed, there was conscious intelligence involved or not. Scientists seem as prone as religionists to take hard stances on this which are not based on anything more than personal prejudice.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20067416.post-85037467758805162352014-10-28T04:49:17.262-04:002014-10-28T04:49:17.262-04:00MSEE: Surely there is a difference between everyd...MSEE: Surely there is a difference between everyday conversations and the kind of logical and rigorous reasoning philosophers are said to engage in.Jeffrey Shallithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12763971505497961430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20067416.post-36118333083030479912014-10-27T22:35:30.578-04:002014-10-27T22:35:30.578-04:00Hi Jeffrey:

Suppose someone asked: "Jeffrey is there a love in your life?" assuming you maybe have the right definition to answer. Or maybe even "Dad you know I love you right?"<br /><br />Would you come back with "sorry but without a definition of that word, I find myself mired in confusion right now."MSEEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05482232168982031574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20067416.post-67673594858474829452014-10-27T10:23:21.895-04:002014-10-27T10:23:21.895-04:00Hi, Geoff!

We are supposed to be content with our folk understanding of these terms, while at the same time manipulating them as if they were formally defined the way terms are defined in physics and mathematics.<br /><br />Without such definitions, no wonder they're mired in confusion.<br /><br />Dennett's takedown seems pretty devastating and conclusive to me.Jeffrey Shallithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12763971505497961430noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20067416.post-53346806706240360652014-10-20T20:25:05.002-04:002014-10-20T20:25:05.002-04:00Surely it's the job of the modern philosopher ...Surely it's the job of the modern philosopher to use this information to address questions like what should constitute "responsibility" in a legal context.<br /><br />(That, and to come up with new fields of human endeavour which will eventually graduate into science, engineering, or other disciplines.)Pseudonymhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04272326070593532463noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20067416.post-2780021941202475432014-10-20T19:23:08.783-04:002014-10-20T19:23:08.783-04:00The funny thing is that this also applies to the f...The funny thing is that this also applies to the free will debate.
