Alexandre Trudeau Whitewashes Castro

Alexandre Trudeau, son of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, has written a truly repulsive reminiscence of Fidel Castro. Trudeau depicts Castro as a "great adventurer", and calls him a "visionary statesman", "audacious", and "brilliant". Cuba, Trudeau says, is "privileged" to have had such a leader.

Nowhere in this grotesque encomium is there any hint that Castro executed and imprisoned thousands of his political opponents. I wonder if Armando Hernandez, who was executed by a Cuban firing squad in 1982 for the crime of painting anti-Castro slogans on bedsheets, would agree with Trudeau's assessment.

It seems that some segments of the Canadian Left are so blinded by their reflex anti-Americanism that they feel it necessary to whitewash the bloody records of dictators. Shame on them.

Is Trudeau on Castro's payroll? Cuba is now gearing for a big celebration should Castro pass away. He's near death and should be asking for forgiveness for his sins or he'll forever be damned.

Forever damned? First of all damned to what? And what were his sins? Overthrowing the US compliant Batista regime and replacing it with something that was supported by Cubans and would declare independance from its neighbouring empire? Was that his sin?
Look I don't pretend that Castro was perfect. But at least he's a representation of whats Cuban and not whats American like the prior Batista dictator was.
And as far as political prisoners, executions and even one step further TORTURE are concerned...all we have to do is look at how the US laws and gov't opperate if we want to see how those things are well executed.
So who's the sinner? Who's being damned by whom? And who needs to ask for forgiveness from who?

Castro's "sins" including murdering and imprisoning thousands of his political opponents. I don't agree with the religious language of "corsica", but these facts are well-established. The fact that the US currently engages in torture is a "tu quoque" form of argument. The US's current bad conduct does not excuse Castro's.
