Jessica Ahlquist - American Hero

Watch the video and tell me you aren't impressed with the quiet confidence and intelligence displayed by Jessica Ahlquist, victorious plaintiff in the Cranston, RI school prayer banner case.

Now contrast it with the threats and vituperation of Christians who wanted a different outcome.

Everybody's favorite moron neurosurgeon actually called Jessica a "pubescent brownshirt" and said she was worse than Nazi Youth. It's hard to imagine anything more vile.

The comparison between Ahlquist and her detractors illustrates the utter depravity induced by religion.

Why say "the utter depravity induced by religion" when you could've said, "the utter depravity that can be induced by one particular religion" or "one particular denomination." Either one of these options would be more accurate.

Miranda,

I'll grant you "can be induced by", but "one particular religion" is clearly ludicrous. All three Abramic religions have induced similar depravity (I can't speak to non-Abramic religions) and "one particular denomination" is even worse.

Oh yeah, I forgot to include the obligatory Simpsons reference:

"Ah, we object to the term "urine-soaked hell hole", when you could have said "pee-pee-soaked heck hole""

John, while "All three Abramic religions have induced similar depravity" is true to varying extents, so is it true that every ideology, including secular ones, "has induced depravity" to some extent.
Also, by acknowledging "(I can't speak to non-Abramic religions)", that supports my point about Jeff overgeneralizing about religions.

If it was a school in Dearborn Michigan with the Shahada on the wall, these same people protesting 'censorship of religion' would be ripping it off the wall with their bare hands, even if it was against court orders.

If you have evidence of that, Schenck, I'll buy it. Otherwise, I'll just think you're making stuff up.

I think all the brouhaha over "creeping sharia law" is pretty good circumstantial evidence.

It's important to remember that this ruling is not about the protection of atheism, but rather the protection of freedom of religion for everybody. American secularism is not anti-religious, but is rather the common meeting ground of all religions. A secular institution such as a public school must keep that common meeting ground clear, lest one group assert power over all others.

Miranda,

I see you have added Goalpost Shifting to your original No true Scotsman argument.

"...so is it true that every ideology, including secular ones, "has induced depravity" to some extent."

No one has ever denied that. But all three Abrahamic religious ideologies commit depravities while claiming the moral high ground It is that hypocrisy that is being criticized.

As for "Also, by acknowledging "(I can't speak to non-Abramic religions)", that supports my point about Jeff overgeneralizing about religions."

Bullcrap. I can't speak to non-Abrahamic religions because I have little to no familiarity with them, so I don't want to give you the weasel room. I'm sure you could find one or two that have never done anything, then claim victory.

I think that Jeff uses "religion" to refer to "Abrahamic religions" because it's easier to type and is typically what Americans have to deal with.
