You do know the 'ego' in question is death, right? (See https://lauradufresne.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/e-panofsky_et-in-arcadia-ego.pdf)

Yes, that's the joke.

Hello Mr. Shallit,

I came upon your blog fortuitiously while researching the wit and wisdom of Dr. Hartnett. Unlike yourself, I'm retired, with copious amounts of time on my hands to spend disappearing into interweb rabbit holes and I wonder why folks of your intellect even bother to comment on the musings of people like Hartnett, or James Tour, for that matter. Please tell me you have not wasted valuable brain energy confronting the Flat Earth Society. :). Won't they simply go away by themselves? And, unfortunately, it's not as if their followers will have their minds changed by something like, you know, facts.

Where was I?

While this is not a comment on the subject article, and of course should be deleted, I discovered no other way to get in touch (probably did not try hard enough) and wanted to share what I thought was a profound observation made by Cartman in one of the South Park episodes you may have missed. A friend was dying in a hospital bed and said he was quite afraid of his impending demise. He asked Cartman, "What's it like after you die?" Cartman thought for a moment and said "I think it's a lot like before you were born." "Oh.", said his friend...

Not exactly, but "...a lot like..." :). Cartman did not elaborate.

All the best.
